Who is a Tamada?

We often use words in everyday life and don’t even fully understand what they mean. For example, when preparing for a wedding reception, most brides and grooms want to invite a wedding entertainer – a fire starter to lead their wedding. Today we’re going to look at what the word “tamada” means. The Duo Fasol explained. 🙂

Where did the term Tamada come from?

Only Georgian culture is ready to explain before anyone else who “Tamadoba” was and what the word “Tamada” means today (more precisely, who it describes). According to explanatory dictionaries, this is the eldest during a festival. If initially the most active participant of the feast was appointed Toastmaster, and it was mostly the same person, later the organizers or participants of the celebration chose him.

“Tamada” what is that? The ancient Persians claimed that “Damad”, also “bridegroom, son-in-law” corresponds to our understanding of today’s presenter. Apparently, it was the prospective husband at the Persian wedding who played the role of the host of the whole celebration.

That’s not the most interesting thing: among the ancient Adyghes / Circassians, the term “Tkhamate” already received a slightly different accent and was translated as “chief” and “leader”. Still, we figured out what the word “tamada” means, and it’s not much different from the modern take on the concept of a wedding entertainer.

How do I choose a Tamada?

If you decide that you need exactly such a person for the celebration, but do not know the nuances of the choice, we will tell you a few important points:

  • Make an appointment well in advance of the wedding and briefly describe the desired style of event, the number of guests and the location

  • Ask lots of questions, don’t be shy

  • Write down your answers in a notebook

  • Ask directly for the total costs and any additional costs

  • Get to know several artists to be able to make a good choice

  • Compare prices, potential quality of services and variety of entertainment programs

  • Don’t be afraid to say “no” if something doesn’t suit you

  • Ask if the moderator needs anything else from you and what upfront payments you will incur.

Tamada is the right decision if you want your wedding to be remembered by young and all guests for a long time! Read more about what the wedding moderation of your celebration could look like if you choose Duo Fasol.
