The wedding event can last from four to seven days, depending on how wealthy and respected the families of the newlyweds are. Although a Moroccan wedding is a very expensive celebration in its scope, which requires a high budget, in Morocco they believe that it happens only once in a lifetime, so it must be done with dignity. Today, most Moroccan marriages are concluded by mutual consent of the parties, although there are also marriages that take place the old fashioned way, when the bride is selected by the relatives themselves. Wedding formalities begin a year before the official ceremony. They represent the conclusion of an oral contract in which the bride’s family brings the pillbox, while the groom’s side pays the amount required to purchase furniture and goods. When all the formalities are completed, this means the end of the engagement and the beginning of preparations for the wedding event.
At a Moroccan wedding, the central image is the bride, with whom most traditions are associated. Before the wedding ceremony, she must go to the Hamam (Turkish bath) with her relatives and friends to undergo a cleansing ceremony in a milk bath. After cleansing, the ritual of henna painting begins – Beberiska, when the feet and hands are painted with henna with symbolic ornaments, as an amulet when entering her new life. This custom has a long history, but nowadays brides limit themselves to applying a ritual stain on their palms.
According to customs, the newlywed woman is dressed by her friends, one of her relatives, or a woman invited for this purpose; the bride herself has no right to do anything. They do her makeup, put on beautiful jewelry, carefully arrange her hair in a hairstyle that no one will ever see, since the bride then puts on a fabric headdress with a veil, arranged in a special way. Moroccan wedding dresses are very beautiful. They are made of satin, silk, taffeta, muslin, they are long and loose, decorated with embroidery and sequins, with a wide belt. The bride’s outfit is often decorated with flowers or shells, which signify the innocence and purity of the newlywed.
The groom gives his chosen one many gifts, most of which have symbolic meaning, such as milk, sugar, dates. Other gifts are designed to show the newlywed’s material wealth. They are all served on large trays covered with conical lids. The marriage takes place in a separate room. It necessarily begins with the reading of the Koran, according to Muslim customs, as well as poetry and singing in which the prophet is extolled. A Moroccan bride does not acquire the status of a wife after marriage, but only when, after the ceremony, she walks around her husband’s house three times and then enters it as a mistress.
The wedding action continues to the endless sounds of national instruments, the beat of drums, the rhythms of folk dances, and music accompanies the newlyweds throughout the wedding week. During the wedding event, the Moroccan bride must change into different clothes multiple times. Sometimes she changes up to seven outfits during a ceremony. After another change of outfit, she sits on a special throne under the admiring glances of the guests. The last of the outfits is a beautiful white wedding dress.
The wedding table in Morocco is varied: meat stew with prunes and almonds; traditional cous – cous; pigeons baked with orange flowers: casseroles with seafood: a large number of different sweets with nuts, oranges and lemons; fruits and mint tea. The most popular wedding dish is Pastila. Pastilla is a round puff pastry pie filled with pigeon or chicken meat, cinnamon, almonds and sugar.
