Host for the Wedding – 8 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Tamada

A wedding host (also Tamada) is an indispensable part of any wedding if you wish for this day to stand out from an ordinary family gathering. It is the moderator who will create a festive mood for the guests, and much of the atmosphere of the wedding evening depends on them. This article explores whether you need a host for the wedding and how to find the best one.

Do you need a moderator (Tamada) for the wedding?

If you have more than 15-18 people at your wedding, then you definitely need a host, or as it is nicely said, a Tamada. Some claim that a moderator is not necessarily required, as guests can decide for themselves what to say and how to entertain themselves. However, believe us, this is not the case. Without a moderator, the wedding often smoothly transitions into a regular gathering after the first one and a half hours of the event, and after 2 hours, some forget why they are there.

Certainly, weddings can be done without banquets, and then no moderator is needed. Still, if there is a banquet, I strongly advise having a moderator. A moderator is not someone who moderates sack races; they are the conductor of the celebration. A good wedding moderator (Tamada) sets the mood and directs the attention of the guests:

  • Organises entertaining activities
  • Prevents the wedding from turning into a drinking party
  • Finds solutions for awkward situations (yes, they do happen)
  • Sometimes even calms the guests, if necessary
  • Sets the tone
  • Conducts traditions and wedding games professionally

The most important thing is that the moderator, like any other wedding service provider, must listen to you. They should hear and understand your desires, rather than just suggesting and imposing their program. After the meeting, you should have a clear understanding of how your evening will unfold.

8 Tips for Choosing a Moderator

  1. It is crucial that the wedding host (Tamada) works in a duo with their own DJ. The DJ’s task is not only to play music during the dance block but also to play suitable background music during the wedding moderation. The Tamada tells your story with words, and the DJ with music. Therefore, we recommend everyone who chooses us as moderators to gladly book a proven moderator team with a DJ.
  2. Everyone should mind their own business at a wedding. Sounds harsh, but let us explain. 🙂 The moderator moderates, the photographer photographs, the decorator decorates. Only then will you get a qualitative result. Do not try to combine all this for cost reasons. Hire professionals who will handle this task professionally and effortlessly and take the worries off your shoulders.
  3. Orient yourself to the number and composition of the guests when making a choice. A young, vibrant moderator is suitable for a youth wedding, where guests are mainly between 18 and 25 years old. Still, a hall where half of the guests are adults, relatives, or business partners can only be led by an experienced and mature moderator. For large weddings with over 100 guests, it makes sense to consider two moderators. It creates a different (but better) dynamic that gives your wedding celebration something exotic.
  4. Do not look at too many moderators at once. After the first five, you will forget the first, but after watching ten, you will regret getting involved in all this. We only work with good moderators (Tamadas) and can gladly advise you (we will discuss your wishes and guest list at a meeting, and it will already be clear who suits you best).
  5. Prepare questions in advance for the call and the meeting. This way, you save time and clearly understand who fits and who does not. (Here, you can learn more about how to better prepare for the meeting.)
  6. Important: Try not to choose the moderator based on videos; get to know them personally.
  7. Listen to what they say and how they say it. Do you like their speech, their attitude towards you and the matter?
  8. Remember that notoriety is by no means a guarantee of a successful wedding but unfortunately a guarantee of high costs.

The wedding moderator (Tamada) is the one who creates the atmosphere at the wedding, and it is essential that they fit you not only on paper but also in spirit. Therefore, always choose personally, talk to them, discuss scenarios, and only when you understand that they are the right fit, book them.
